Before the visit

Before you call about a garage door in Texas

We did not find a separate Texas state license for garage door work. What to check instead, what the call is for, and what you will be asked.

Calls may be recorded. Describing the problem commits you to nothing.

The number on this site schedules a visit. It connects to an independent garage door provider in your area, or to a company that books appointments for providers, and the call's purpose is to agree on a time for someone to look at the door.

Who the line is for

Repair, replacement and installation of garage doors and openers, for owners and renters, at homes and at commercial buildings. It is not for buying parts or for a price over the phone. A garage door price depends on what is found: the springs, how many are replaced, the weight of the door, the cables and rollers, the opener. A number given before anyone has seen the door is a guess.

Licensing in Texas

We did not find a separate Texas state license for garage door work. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation's list of licensed occupations has no garage door category; it does include electricians. That is not the same as "no license needed": cities may require registration or permits for some work, and electrical work is licensed separately by the state.

The Texas Attorney General's advice fits: "If you are hiring the kind of worker who must be licensed by the state (such as an electrician), contact the licensing agency to check the person's credentials." For the door itself, the Federal Trade Commission's general advice applies:

Consider only contractors who are licensed and insured. Check with your state or county government to confirm a contractor's license, and ask the contractor for proof of insurance.

— FTC, How To Avoid a Home Improvement Scam

Proof of insurance is the check that always applies. The same FTC page warns: "Scammers ask you to pay for everything up front or only accept cash."

If you are sold more than the repair

A repair visit you requested is outside the FTC's Cooling-Off Rule, but "things you buy beyond that repair or maintenance request are covered." A new door or opener sold in your home for household use can come with three business days to cancel, and the seller has to tell you so in writing. The rule does not cover purchases for a business, and a buyer gives the right up by signing a handwritten statement that the work is needed for a bona fide emergency.

What you will be asked

  • what stopped working, in a sentence;
  • the door: panels or one piece, one car or two, roughly how old;
  • the springs: a coil above the door or springs beside the tracks, and whether one has a gap;
  • the opener's brand and age;
  • the city, and whether the address is near the coast.

The call itself

Calls may be recorded by the parties that carry and answer them. Describing the problem commits you to nothing, and nothing is scheduled until you agree on a time. How this site is paid is on its own page.

The line takes repair, replacement and installation of garage doors and openers, for owners and renters, at homes and at commercial buildings. It is not for buying parts, doors on box trucks and trailers, or a price quoted over the phone without a visit. The price is named after someone has seen the door.
